Company at Christmas


Sixth Form tutor groups have worked together to produce lovely gift hampers for Company at Christmas, an initiative run by the Dorchester Volunteer Centre. 



Thomas Hardye students retain maths competition prize

Maths winners

In November two teams of sixth formers took part in the Ritangle Maths Competition. The teams had to answers a new question each day for 25 days, then complete a final set of questions against the clock. The students had to solve complex problems, write computer programs and had a brilliant day working together on the final problems.


Year 10 Skills for Life pupils help the environment so they can enjoy it!

On Tuesday 4 December a group of Year 10 students, in their outdoor learning with Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre, took part in a five minute beach clean at Chesil Cove, Portland.  The main problem was the amount of plastic and rope which had been washed up.  They also found a dead dolphin.


Cookery Club get festive


The year 9 Cookery Club have been having fun recently, making and decorating cakes with a Christmas theme. The enthusiastic cooks produced some very festive designs, most of them including lots of edible glitter, with the prize for the most imaginative going to Caitlin Cottrell.


Fantastic Community Lecture by George McGavin

On Monday 10th December, Thomas Hardye had the second of its programme of Community Lectures. Titled 'Tales from Television' it was given by Dr George McGavin.



Students showcase their dance talent

On 29 November over 50 students from all year groups performed dance work from their curriculum and extra-curricular activities at the Autumn Dance Performance.



THS students help switch on Christmas Lights


Last Saturday afternoon, three students from Thomas Hardye school, Amber Mills, Nadia McPartlan, and Jess Mutch,  dressed up as Disney characters to help switch on the Christmas lights and spread some festive cheer in Brewery Square,  Dorchester. 


First heats of 'Yes Chef' Competition take place

Recently, eight budding chefs from year 10  took part in the first heat of the Yes Chef competition, run by County Fare Foods. Tanisha Ring, Jess Mutch, Imogen Cole-Holland, Isaac Johnston, Lucy Andrews, Sam Winstanley, Robyn Masters, and Sophie Cary all had to produce either a seasonal risotto or a seasonal soup, together with a fruit sponge pudding



A sunny day greeted us for our dressage and show jumping qualifying rounds at Moreton.  Our riders for the dressage teams were Connor Pullin, Imogen Coles-Holland, Molly Russell and Jasmin Edwardson who made up team one, who did very well to finish 2nd overall ...


Year 13 'Grow a Fiver' Challenge

On Friday 9th November we celebrated Year 13s impressive fundraising skills by announcing this year's inter tutor group 'Grow a Fiver' Charity competition winners.



Thomas Hardye Remembrance Ceremony


On this very special year of commemorating the end of World War One a hundred years ago, there were concerns that the weather would curtail the annual Thomas Hardye Remembrance event. However, almost on cue, the sun came out as the whole school and its guests assembled on Queens Avenue.


Poppy's Selection Success


Poppy Elliman (12AO) has been selected to represent the ESSA England 2001 Girls Team Vs Australia 2001 Team in Water Polo. This is a truly phenomenal achievement for Poppy's and it is rightly deserved after the numerous hours of hard work and dedication she puts into her Water Polo training.

After an exciting week in June hosting our American partners it was time for our exchange visit… we left in the early hours of Friday 19th October and headed for Mechanicsburg High School, west of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.


THS Goes to China

China Visit

On Thursday 18th November 25 students, Miss Bright, Mrs Hedgecox and Mr Hardinge  started their epic journey to China. It was 2 a.m. when we left Dorchester and after a very long flight we arrived in Shanghai on Friday morning. 


History students uncover Elizabethan and Victorian London


GCSE History students visited London to gain an insight into Elizabethan theatre by touring Shakespeare’s Globe. Tour guides from the Globe helped bring to life what it would have been like to visit the theatre at its height of popularity towards the end of the Elizabethan era.


Human Rights lawyer speaks to Sixth Form

On 18th October The Thomas Hardye Sixth Form were pleased to host human rights lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith. Clive spoke to Year 12 about their ambitions and then went on to discuss his Post Mortem project investigating and revealing innocent people who have been executed.


THS Student competes in China


Over the summer holidays Ben Richardson was fortunate enough to be given a grant by ITCA (International Topper Class Association) and the Chinese government to go and sail in the Topper World Championships in Shenzhen,


Shakespeare comes alive for Year 10 & 11

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Years 10 and 11 had an amazing opportunity to watch the Shakespeare play that they are studying for GCSE. The National Production Company performed versions of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice’.

The library and the English department hosted a visit by Adam Preston, a writer and Nelson descendant who launched the Trafalgar Way short story competition.


Year 11 Stars Netball Success


Millie Hambleton-White and Tia Chaloner have both been selected to represent the Severn Stars Nova Academy for Netball. They endured two trials earlier this month and have been narrowed down to the final squad of twenty girls. This is an outstanding achievement.


Henning students work with Damers First for the Environment


Working in support of the ‘Campaign to Protect Rural England’ Henning Student Environment Group walked to Damers First School and met the Year 3 class of Mr Moore.



European Champions in Martial Arts

During the summer holidays both David Lewis Year 10 and his brother Damian of Year 9 went to Liechtenstein to take part in the European Martial Arts Games.



Another great year of GCSE Results for Thomas Hardye


Following on from last week’s exceptional A level results, Thomas Hardye reached another milestone with a record year at GCSE. Despite the introduction of new, more demanding examinations 77% of students achieved 5 passes including English and maths surpassing all previous records.

The Thomas Hardye School is celebrating another outstanding set of A Levels results even surpassing last year’s record high. The overall pass rate was 99% with one third of passes at grade A or A* - a remarkable achievement in a comprehensive school.


THS College Token Winners


Mr Foley presented the Headteacher's Awards this morning to the students in Years 9 and 10 who had achieved the most tokens across the year. These students have been able to consistently produce outstanding work.


THS  ‘Pop-Up’ Escape Room

Outstanding Netball Success


Two Thomas Hardye students have been selected to be part of the Team Bath Netball futures programme. Skyla Erskine has been selected for the U17 Team Bath and Jessamy Baker has been selected for U19 Team Bath.


Year 12 visit Bath University Sports Centre


The year 12 A level students experienced an exciting day out this week when they visited Bath Universities Olympic sports centre. The purpose of the visit was to raise our students' awareness of university and undergraduate opportunities.


THS CCF wins at Okehampton


THS CCF deployed to Okehampton Camp on Dartmoor Training Area, Devon from 7 – 13 July 2018 on the 2018 HQSW Central Summer Camp for a week of intense training, personal development and success.

On Wednesday 11th July, The Thomas Hardye Sixth Form was pleased to host Jamie Windust as part of our guest speaker programme. Jamie, a former THS student, came in to talk about the media, authenticity and truth.


First Ever Japanese Exchange with Thomas Hardye

At the start of July, the Thomas Hardye School was lucky enough to welcome students from Japan in our very first Exchange with that country. Some of our own students are now benefitting from learning Japanese with Mrs Yoko Leedham, who also arranged this exchange.


Year 6 SAT's Celebration


A group of Year 9 girls from two sets in P.E went to St. Osmunds Middle School to host their Yr 6 celebration. All the Yr9 girls got into different groups of around 2-3 people. .

On 27th June Year 10 and 12 History students were given the opportunity of attending the Chalke Valley History Festival. The annual event provides students with the opportunity of taking part in a wide range of history-based activities.

Maria and Claire from Waitrose, Dorchester kindly came in to school for the second time this term, to deliver their fun and informative fish demonstration and practical lesson to all year 10 GCSE food students. 


THS students accepted for RA On-line Exhibition

Once again Thomas Hardye students have had spectacular success in gaining entries to the Royal Academy A Level Summer Exhibition. From over 2100 entries nationwide, forty three artworks were selected which includes 9 from Thomas Hardye.


Maddy makes it to the national finals


Maddy Johnson of Year 11 has made it through to the English Schools Athletics Competition in Birmingham this July. She is competing in the 1500 metres and is part of a 25 member Dorset Team. 16 year old Maddy is a member of Dorchester Athletics Club and ran a number of times over the season to earn her place, with an overall best time of 4.34.


Biology A-level students go behind the scenes
at Porton Down.


On Monday 11th June 25 sixth form Biology students, many from the GENEsis genetics club took part in an historic visit to the Public Health England research laboratories at Porton Down.


Dorset Secondary Schools Regatta 2018

It was always going to be difficult to retain the title of Dorset Schools Sailing Regatta Champions, however the combined Dorchester schools team took up the challenge with enthusiasm in Poole Park. Dorchester schools eventually achieved fourth place overall with some fantastic individual performances.

Equestrian Success

We had a very successfully day at our ODE at Moreton on the 20 May 2018. This event is a qualifier for the NSEA Eventing Championships taking place at Ascott-Under-Wychwood on 06 October 2018.


Alex has outstanding success in golf


Thomas Hardye student Alex Johnston has successfully qualified for the English Schools' National Golf Championship. This is after Alex was placed second in the South West Finals; which were played at Wells in Somerset.

In our recent game, Thomas Hardye U15 Boys Cricket team beat Colfox by 56 runs. We hit 190 from our 20 overs with Jamie Stewart hitting a match winning 111 not out, from 47 balls with ten 4's and nine 6's. Colfox replied with 138 for 8.


BTEC Car Boot Sale

On Saturday 28th April 2018, the year 13 BTEC Business students hosted a Car Boot Sale in aid of raising money for Cancer Research UK. The event was managed by the students as part of their Business course to manage an event to complete their Unit 4 “Event Management” unit.

Due to the late onslaught of winter this year, the Walk for Water was postponed till the end of April. However it still brought a cold windy day for just under 50 students to take part in the challenge.

Since the Autumn term, a group of 8 year 11 students have been linked in pairs with a year 9 Trenchard tutor group. They have been going in to the tutor group during morning registration and taking part in a variety of different activities.

Just before Easter Holiday, a group of 16 French A level students have spent a week in France with their correspondents in Bayeux, France.

On the 14th March, students studying Spanish in years 9 and 10 spent a week in Murcia to practise their Spanish on the first part of the Spanish exchange with our partner school, the Instituto Mariano Baquero.

Ten budding historians had their history studies brought to life when they met a former Thomas Hardye student who had served in the Vietnam War. Robin Wallace trained as a doctor and moved to America in 1965. Upon returning home in 1967 he received an envelope drafting him into the US Army Medical Corps.

On Tuesday 20th March, student voice members Sophie, Sarah, and Niall attended a DASP Student Voice conference at St Osmunds Middle School with other students from across DASP.


Thomas Hardye UKLO success!


A team of brave Year 11, 12 and 13 students took on the challenge of the UK Linguistics Olympiad Advanced competition just before half term. They sat a two-and-a-half-hour paper designed to test their skills in linguistic problem solving.


Panthers roar through to National 4x4 Finals

The Panthers Team, a group of five dedicated students from The Thomas Hardye School who for the third consecutive year are entering into the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools competition. 2 of the members of the team are Arkwright scholars and are finding the scholarship very helpful.

THS salutes Ellie's Windsurfing Success


Last year Ellie Wilcox (10SW) was selected to be a member of the British Youth Sailing Team and represent Great Britain at the Techno Windsurfing Championships in Salou Spain. She is one of 13 young people selected for the team, in which 330 young people competed.

News from the Thomas Hardye Equestrian Team

We kicked off the 2018 season with NSEA Team and Individual County Qualifiers for Show Jumping at Moreton Equestrian Centre on Sunday, 28 January 2018. A large number of entries saw a very competitive competition and a very high standard of riding.



Rotary Young Chef Competition

Earlier this month, Olivia Lovell in 11KM represented the school in the District final of the Rotary Young Chef competition, held at Burnham –on-Sea. 



Marvellous skiing in Montafon

Ski Trip

During February half term, 43 students made their way to Montafon, Austria to embark on a week's ski holiday. Some of the students (and staff) were complete beginners, admitting to never putting a pair of skies on before. Whilst others would use a black ski run as their warm up.


Success for our Model UN Team

On Sunday 4th February, 16 of our Model UN students represented Sweden, Indonesia, South Korea and South Africa at the tenth annual Bristol Grammar School Model UN.  The students were fantastic ambassadors for The Thomas Hardye School.


Celebrating curiosity at the HPQ Presentation Evening


Thirty-one 11 students who have been taking part in the ‘Aspiring Minds’ programme for able students since last July saw the culmination of their hard work on Thursday 25th January evening, where they present their final pieces to staff, students and parents.

Jamie Jones from Yalbury Cottage Hotel and Restaurant, recently came into school to demonstrate to year 10, 11, 12 and 13 food students how to create spectacular dishes using creative garnishes and decorations.  Jamie showed us how to make various purees, chocolate decorations, different flavoured jus.

Beauty and the Beast

We had a fantastic time at the THS Panto “Beauty & The Beast” – oh yes we did! A big thank you to all those who braved the cold to come and support the 40 students involved. The pupils were exceptional and did a brilliant job of the jokes and the songs and there was even some fun dance routines too!


U17 Bath Netball Trials

On Friday 6th January, Skyla Erskine 11EC, Tia Challoner 10US and Carla Wood 10NP attended an U17 Netball trial for TeamBath. These girls were competing at a very high standard, two age categories above and is a phenomenal achievement for them to experience this standard of play at such a young age.


Thomas Hardye Students impress in Debate Competition

Four of our fantastic Sixth Formers were selected to compete in the regional rounds of The Great Debate, a competition run annually by the Historical Association.  The competition was hosted by Exeter University and saw our students competing against other schools and colleges across the South West.

Recently, Kai Trevett in 10EM took part in the THE TEFLON DIAMOND STANDARD AWARDS cookery competition at the Waitrose cookery School in Finchley Road, London. 


11 Oxbridge Offers for Thomas Hardye Students


English, Maths and Science lead the way with this year’s Oxbridge offers, contributing to the total of 11 successful applications. Oxbridge applicants face a demanding admissions process including early submission of the UCAS application, admissions tests, sending written work and the interview.
